I have dug up my daffodils as I want to plant something else in the bed. Is it ok to put the stems %26amp; bulbs in my composting bin? Or will I end up with daffodils sprouting up everywhere when I eventually use the compost? As you can tell I am a composting novice!
Can I put my daffodils %26amp; bulbs in the composting bin?
If there is a chance that you might want to grow your daffodil/narcissus again in the future, I'd either give them or throw them away. Once they rot, the bacteria will kill any other such bulbs that come into contact with that soil. I don't know about other buls, but I've experienced that myself with narcissus, which Daffodils are related closely to. By the way, they are poionous, so don't use them as feed ...

Reply:I plant original "tazetta narcissus" around plants oft bothered by gophers, %26amp; the gophers then leave them alone. They are prolific, but don't really need divided. (Amaryllis belladona's bulb is poisonous, too., but not roots, so they afford no protection from gophers.) Report It
Reply:Keep the bulbs for planting again for next spring. Leave them to dry out, and when they are dry, put them in a carrier bag and store in a dry place.
Reply:you could have ,planted the daffs, elsewhere,or dig up and dry them and put in your shed or garage for next year.
Reply:Why don't you plant them somewhere else, or give them to a friend, instead of throwing them away?
Reply:Just give the excess bulbs that you don't want to a friend. Placing bulbs in the compost bin is a waste. If you do throw the dafs in the compost bin they will be like every other thing that goes in, they will just rot away and make lovely smelling compost if you turn it over once a week.
