I have daffodils and tulips sprouting in the middle of my yard. I've read that it's best to move them after they bloom and the leaves are yellowed...but I'll need to mow my lawn before mid-June! When is the second best time to move the bulbs and still keep them alive and blooming? Any tips?
I need info about transplanting daffodils and tulips?
You can move them now if you hurry, but as stated below, dig deep, try to keep all the roots intact. If you dig about 1/2 foot circumference around them you should be fine. If you don't want to risk it, as soon as they are done blooming you can cut the leaf stalks down to almost the ground and mow over them, it won't hurt them. Then transplant them in the fall.
Reply:if there just now starting to sprout you can dig deep around them but get another spot picked out first dig it deep well may be a little deeper so toy can add some good potting soil this way you can transplant them without schocking the roots i think you can do it good luck P's i have did it before i hope i have helped you
Reply:you can dig them up as soon as the blooms are gone, just do your best to dig up the green plant part along with the root. The green leaves will continue to nourish the bulb and you will have a better chance at getting them to come back up next spring. Let them dry out somewhere like a garage or basement, then plant them in a more appropriate spot in the fall.
Reply:It's really best to plant daffodils and tulips in fall...but you can dig up the bulbs after they are done blooming and store them in dark cool closet over summer and it won't hurt them.
